DIY Lotions and Lipbalms

"Your skin is your largest organ", I'm sure all of us have heard this dozens of times over the years. However, how many of us actually take it seriously?

As I'm writing this, it's currently November in Michigan with PLENTY of snow to go around! Heaters are blasting on high, leaving hands and feet feeling dry and uncomfy. Nothing better for dry skin than lotion, am i right? However, with lots of toxins and fake fragrances in store bought lotions, that's not something I want to put on MY skin. Welcome to the beauty of DIY! Here's some of my favorites:

This recipe is great for arms and legs and smells amazing! Perfect for pampering, a spa day, or just next to your bed :)

DIY Organic Vanilla Bean Butter

  • 1/2 cup organic unrefined coconut oil

  • 1/4 cup organic unrefined cocoa butter

  • 1/4 cup organic unrefined avocado oil

  • 1/8 tsp organic vanilla bean powder

  • 5-7 drops Christmas Spirit blend essential oil

  1. In a double boiler, melt the coconut oil and cocoa butter. As soon as it's melted, remove from heat.

  2. Incorporate avocado oil and vanilla bean powder. Then pour it into a glass bowl and refrigerate for about 30 minutes (You want a solidified ring around the edge)

  3. Add in the Christmas Spirit and mix with a hand mixer until fluffy.

  4. Store in glass containers (I use mason jars)

This one is great for daily wear and helps to cleanse and and unclog pores!

DIY Daily Skin Moisturizer

  • 1/4 cup organic unrefined coconut oil

  • 10 drops Carrot Seed essential oil

  • 6 drops Myrrh essential oil

  • 4 drops Lavender essential oil

  • 4 drops Frankincense essential oil

  1. Whip everything with a hand mixer and store in a glass jar.

  2. To use, apply desired amount directly on skin.

This one is one of my personal favorites for the winter time! Perfect for hands and feet, this one has a less greasy texture and is easily portable.

DIY Lotion Bars

  • 1/4 cup unrefined organic coconut oil

  • 1/4 cup raw organic shea butter (avoid if you have a severe nut allergy & double the coconut)

  • 1/4 cup organic beeswax pellets

  • 1/4 tsp organic jojoba or avocado oil

  • 20 drops of your favorite essential oil

  1. Melt coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax pellets in a double boiler. Once it's melted, remove from heat and add jojoba or avocado oil and essential oil.

  2. Pour into a parchment paper lined 8x8 glass baking dish or into silicon molds.

  3. When hardened, cut into pieces or remove from mold. Store in glass container. Use like you would lotion.

Winter also means chapped lips and possible cracking- no one wants that! These final three recipes below are the perfect solution to chapped lips and can even be used as emergency lotion in a pinch ;)
