Healthy Beauty Products
Beauty products! That area has sure changed in my life. There are so many toxic chemicals applied on the skin year after year. We all want to look nice but at what cost?! Yikes!
I remember when I first started wanting to make my own products. They are now known as DIY's- Do It Yourself. There weren't very many good books on the market. When I did find recipes that I wanted to try, my next hurdle was trying to find the ingredients.
Things are so much easier now thanks to Pinterest, Amazon, online stores, the Internet & more resource books than you could imagine.
If you are striving for health, wellness & safer products then don't overlook your beauty products.
Nourishing the skin is absolutely the way to go!
Now, now...don't go messing with my make-up!
Make up is something that gets over looked often. Anything that is applied to our largest organ really does need to be examined. The store shelves are full of so many brands & it can get a bit confusing. Be careful when you reach for your favorites. Can you honestly say you know whats in it?! For years I shopped by price & that was one of the worse things I could have done.
There are many companies that offer a less toxic product. I've spent some time weeding through almost 40 brands & I can tell you that a good majority never made it to the research phase because the prices were way too expensive. Better choices need to be practical ones as well. I'll spend more on safer products but there is a line that I won't cross either.
My goal was to search & find the most cost effective non-toxic make-up. I will share my Top 5 Picks with you! These are safer recommendations only. Ultimately, you'll have to decide what's best for you!
I couldn't have done it without the help of Skin Deep Database, http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/. The lower the number then the safer the product. This is another helpful resource for anyone that wants to research less toxic choices. Please do your own research. Be sure to look at the ingredients & not just the price.
The Top 5 are available online for purchasing & are not in any particular order. There are many more brands out there so please don't think this list is all there is.
There's a free App called ThinkDirtyApp,
& it's a great tool available for rating how toxic or clean a brand is. If you're out shopping then just scan the bar-code
& it will rate the product for you.
Some of their products have a longer ingredient list so be sure to check out each one. They have a full line of cosmetics that range in price from $14 to $34.
Each product varies in the amount of ingredients with some having very little. They offer a full line ranging in prices of $11 to $14.
Elegant Minerals Make-up
The ingredients list is minimal & they offer a full line of cosmetics that range in price from $5 to $21.
Classy Minerals Make-up
The products available are the basics & have minimal ingredients. Prices range from $5 to $25.
Green Beauty Cosmetics
They do have shea butter in some of the products so if you have a nut allergy then please avoid. They have a limited line of foundations & lip wear. Price range is $6 to $10.
I also recommend Physicians Formula Organic Wear & it's available in most stores. Some of their product line doesn't score well with the EWG data base but they have a decent amount that does. I stick with 1-2's & avoid any products that score 3 & higher.

Did you know that you can make your own make-up?! Yep....who knew!!! There's a DIY for everything.
Overthrow Martha has a website & Pinterest with DIY make-up recipes. I am definitely going to be trying some of these as soon as I get all the ingredients!
I'm sure you can find other DIY recipes online as well.
Every gal likes to paint their nails every now & again. After all, sandals need polished toe nails...I think it's a rule of some kind ;)
Let's make healthier choices when it comes to nail polish. Nail polish is sky rocket high in harmful chemical ingredients! The EPA has it classified as household hazardous waste. If you go & treat yourself to getting your nails done then it's pretty much a toxic treat- blah :/ Even the air quality in a nail salon is an invisible chemical cloud.
Thank goodness for companies that care & have committed to offering safer products. Water based nail polish is the best to use. It's a much healthier option. I would definitely use 2 coats of polish with the water based type. You can find these online directly from their website & there are other online resources that sell them too.
Water Based Healthier Nail Polish Brands
1) Acquarella http://acquarella.com/ It's around $16
2) Keeki Pure & Simple https://www.keekipureandsimple.com/ingredient-standards.php This one is about $10
Their kids line was first & its called Piggy Paint http://www.piggypaint.com/shop/nail-polish/ They both run about $8.
4) Honeytree Gardens http://honeybeegardens.com/watercolors-nail-enamel/ This one is around $13
Healthy Non-Toxic Nail Polish Brand
* If you really must have a polish that isn't water based then make sure to be careful & pay attention to the ingredients. Look for it to say 5 Free or higher. What that means is it's free of the top 5 carcinogens used in regular nail polish.
6) Zoya http://www.zoya.com/ It's 5 Free & around $10
7) LVX https://shoplvx.com/the-brand/ This one is 7 Free & more pricey at about $18
8) Ella Mila http://www.ellamila.com/ This polish is 5 Free & runs about $11
If you’re using essential oils to beautify yourself ;) & making DIY beauty products, then you’ll need to be familiar with carrier oils & butters!
What is a carrier oil? It’s a liquid oil that carries, spreads, & evenly distributes other ingredients into the skin.
What is a butter? It’s a solid oil with moisturizing ingredients that pamper & nourish the skin.
Both have many skin benefits!
These are two quick & easy explanations of what they are. There’s tons of detailed information available out there so please check into them on your own ☺ Remember, they’re also helpful for diluting essential oils!
You can combine carrier oils & butters together in DIY recipes with your favorite essential oils. You can also use them completely by themselves if you want. You know your skin & what it needs better than anyone else.
When I look for ingredients for my DIY recipes, it’s important that they nourish the skin & don’t clog pores. I know there are many types on the market but I lean toward certain ones.
Organic, cold pressed, raw & unrefined are all key to me. Raw & unrefined basically mean the same thing. Unrefined is usually the liquids & raw is the butters.
It’s important to note that chemicals are used to refine things so that’s one of the reasons I steer clear. Cold pressed & unrefined means all the good beneficial properties are still there. I have learned a few things all these years about choosing a more natural & pure lifestyle;
~Don’t skimp on the product & know your source
~Quality = pay a bit more
~Cheap = synthetics & not worth it
My Top 7 Organic, Cold Pressed & Unrefined Carrier Oils
(All organic, cold pressed & unrefined)
My Top 3 Organic, Raw Cold Pressed Butters
(All organic, cold pressed & raw)
*Butters need another liquid carrier oil to absorb. Melt them on low heat & remove immediately. You can place them in the refrigerator until they just start to form & then whip with a mixer. This will make them light & fluffy.
For me, butters need a little Beeswax! Beeswax is in its own category all together.
Organic Beeswax- Protects skin while allowing it to breathe. It helps all lotions & lip balms absorb. Moisturizes, softens & provides a protective barrier. Hydrates, calms & soothes skin. Vitamin A, cell support, improves & conditions skin texture & doesn’t clog pores.
